Troye Sivan — Blue Neighbourhood

Lushly crafted, deftly sketched character vignettes.

"My youth is yours," he declares over booming drums and pulsing, shimmering pop production. Sivan is not only speaking to his lover, but to the audience with whom he shares intimate details of his own life. His youth is ours.

Blue Neighbourhood deftly sketches character vignettes with sharpness and emotional clarity that would greenify many an A-list pop star. While he leans on clichés as metaphorical shorthand slightly too often, his voice is unmistakably his own — a sighing, ingenuous instrument somehow heavy with wisdom beyond his years.

Underpinning his distinctly teenage outlook are energetic layers of frenetic, skittering beats that Sivan crafts himself. His ear for retaining detail and finesse while turning all dials to eleven is quite astonishing. Maximalism has never sounded so fresh.

This is only the beginning for Troye. As he moves past this debut album, he can only hone his already tremendous skill. Watch this space.
