Deerhoof — La Isla Bonita

A rock band under no obligation to be predictable or comprehensible.

It is easy to dismiss that with which we are not familiar or in which we are not interested as odd or strange or weird. Be it out of a genuine necessity to minimise occupied mental bandwidth or out of sheer innocuous laziness, we are all guilty of dismissing what is new and surprising.

Other bands of a similar instrumental layout (assorted guitars, drumkit, voice) tend to write songs following some sort of narrative or thematic link. Deerhoof feel no such obligation to be in any way predictable or comprehensible.

Imagine a night of carousing cooling down into a small group splayed across various sitting implements in an approximation of an ellipse. What ideas for lyrical content may flash and flit between these primed minds? A song extolling the virtues of female bass guitar players! A song about the paralysing indecision between the plurality of tasty options at a hotel breakfast buffet! A song consisting entirely of the word 'panda!' To find the end product of such a brainstorm, one need look no further than Deerhoof's prodigious discography.

How fortuitous it is that the group's eclecticism is limited to their lyrics. Otherwise their considerable output may resemble the godawful insult to music that is the entire cacophonous genre of free jazz. Any travesty indistinguishable from chucking a brass section and a soy latte down a flight of stairs has no place in a civilised society.

Should you wish to expand your musical horizons to encompass broader, less literal wordsmithing, Deerhoof is an encouraging place to begin.
