Have you ever imagined what it would sound like if Taylor Swift's 1989 were smooshed together with My Brightest Diamond's All Things Will Unwind? On their latest album, Chairlift temper their poppy 80s-throwback blockbusting tendencies with a flighty, feather-light chamber orchestra.
Glassy vocals are gently layered on top like a delicate aural croissant, glazed with a thin slick of electronic pitch-correction. The contrast with the warm, organic instrumentation is slightly unsettling — enough to tip the metaphorical pastry sideways into the uncanny valley.
This album leaves a much larger impression than its humble, introverted design would suggest. Moth, it seems, is an eminently appropriate title.
